Martin Sharp, Executive Director, DFK International
“Building international relations in a multi-cultural context does take time and effort. It is important not to just take your own cultural experience, background and approach to business into that environment. You need to be sensitive and take due account of the way in which other people do business.
In my military experience that was also very clear. I recall in Sierra Leone having to make operational plans for a hostage rescue mission and needing to coordinate our activities with the Indian Air Force that was operating helicopters for the United Nations. I remember sitting down to tea with my Indian Air Force counterparts and spending considerable time discussing cricket before we were able to get down to the business of airspace coordination.”
